The penultimate matches in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League were played. A bulk of teams joined the strongest that secured a playoff spot after the fourth leg.
Group A. Manchester City beat PSG and topped the group with 12 points, while the Parisians have only 8. However, that’s enough to follow further as Leipzig and Brugge have 4 points each.
Group B. Liverpool won its fifth game at home against Porto and have 15 now. However, the Portuguese squad is a pole-position with 5 points, ahead of Milan and Atletico Madrid (both have 4 points). Milan will host unmotivated Britons in the last round, while Porto will fight with Atletico in Portugal.
Group C. Ajax continued a winning streak by defeating the worst team in the recent UCL group stage – Besiktas, the only team with zero points at the moment. Borussia Dortmund lost in Portugal to Sporting and now have 6 points and 3 points behind the Lisbon team. Sporting will travel to the Netherlands in the last round and need a draw to go to playoffs, while Borrusia will host Besiktas and must win and hope for Ajax power at home.
Group D. The group where almost everything is defined at the moment. The only intrigue is what will be the places of Real Madrid (12) and Inter Milan (10), which will fight in Spain in the last round. Shakhtar, with only 1 point, will host Sheriff (6) in a match for prestige.
Group E. A rather interesting situation in group E, where Barcelona can go to the Europa league if they do not win a match against Bayern in Germany. The Munich club has 15 points and is guaranteed first place, while Barcelona with 7 points needs a victory not to look at another match. Thus, Benfica(5) will host Dynamo Kyiv (1) and are likely to win, having an advantage in the face-to-face stats with Catalonians so the latter can be out of the tournament if they play a draw with Bayern.
Group F. Here, a defining clash will take place, where Atalanta (6) will face Villareal (7) in Italy for the second spot and playoff ticket. Manchester United guaranteed the first spot with 10 points and will host Young Boys (4), which still have chances for a third position and Europa League games in spring.
Group G. The most interesting situation happened in the group with no clear favourite. Thus, Lille (8) will play against Wolfsburg (5) and can be overtaken by the Germans. Sevilla (6) will go to Salzburg (7) and have to win if they want to proceed to the playoffs. There are too many variants that exist before the last round to explain them all, but every team has chances for playoffs here.
Group H. Another group where everything is defined and is predictable. Juventus and Chelsea have both 12 points and are already in the playoffs. Zenit (4) cannot reach them, while Malmo (1) also has no chance to overcome the Russians. The last games Zenit – Chelsea and Juventus – Malmo are almost friendly, with the only task for favourites to grab the top spot and have potentially weaker opponents in the first playoff round.
