The group stage of the EU qualification for the WC 2022 Qatar is over. Ten winners of their groups can seek hotels and book tickets to Qatar, while the other ten should pass an additional playoff round.
The most unexpected results came from groups A, and C. Serbia overcame Portugal beating them at Estadio da Luz in the last match, sending favourites to playoffs. Switzerland played two draws with Italy in group C and lost fewer points in other matches, claiming a direct spot in Qatar. The recent Europe Champions now will have to pass an additional stage to battle for the global crown.
The other 8 groups finished quite predictably. Spain, France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Croatia, England, and Germany topped their groups and can relax a bit. The responsive runners-up are Sweden, Ukraine, Wales, Scotland, Turkey, Russia, Poland, and North Macedonia.

The additional playoff phase will take place in spring, where Austria and the Czech Republic will join the mentioned ten teams as winners of the Nations League qualification. The teams will be divided into seeded and unseeded ones and grouped into three quartets with only one winner. It will be like three mini-tournaments between four teams, in the one-match format.
